Bhubaneswar: The Additional District Judge (ADJ) on Thursday pronounced a death sentence to Sanjit Das of Ghatikia village under Khandagiri police station, for the murder of his wife and attempted murder of his daughter.
The judgement was delivered by Second Additional District and Sessions Judge Bandana Kar in Bhubaneswar terming the barbaric murder case as the ‘rarest of rare’ crime to set an example for society.
According to reports, in June 2022, the convict Sanjit Das alias Banku, was financially dependent on his wife Saraswati Das, a head nurse at a private Hospital. On the crime day, Banku demanded money for his drug addiction, upon denial he brutally murdered his wife by stabbing her 33 times with a sharp knife. He also attempted to murder his 6-year-old daughter by slitting her throat. The daughter survived after two months of hospitalization.
Based on the complaint by the deceased’s brother Shashikant Das, a case was registered at Bharatpur Police Station Case No.-237/2022, was investigated by SI Bijaya Kumar Das, who swiftly arrested the accused and filed a charge sheet before the scheduled time.
After considering 15 witnesses and 57 documents regarding the case Judge Kar sentenced convict Banku to hanging under Section 302 for murder, life imprisonment u/s 307 and 326 for attempted murder, and three years in jail u/s 324.
The death sentence is intended to serve as a deterrent for similar crimes in the future. This is the first case of the Commissionerate of Police that was sentenced to death by hanging.
