New Delhi: Over a month has passed since India’s historic victory in the T20I World Cup, yet the memories remain vivid in the nation’s consciousness.
The 11-year wait for an ICC trophy concluded when India triumphed over South Africa in the final, securing their second T20 World Cup title. The team’s return was postponed due to Hurricane Beryl, but BCCI Secretary Jay Shah facilitated their journey by arranging a chartered flight for the Indian squad stranded in Barbados.
The special flight, AIC24WC, became the most tracked in history as fans awaited the return of their champions. The contingent relished the 16-hour flight, proudly bearing the T20 World Cup trophy. A Star Sports producer shared insights from the journey.
“During the flight from Barbados to Delhi, it’s unlikely anyone slept over six hours, the maximum. The atmosphere was never silent; there was constant mingling. Players interacted with press members and others. Star Sports engineers, whose flight was cancelled, were also on board. Rohit Sharma visited several times. At one point, Rahul Dravid sought a four-seater in economy class for rest, moving from business class,” recounted the producer.
“I was awakened by Rohit’s scolding, though in jest. Then Hardik, Rishabh, and others joined in discussions with the media, creating a buzz of conversation.”
On arrival, the team was greeted by throngs of fans, celebrating with a T20 World Cup trophy parade in Mumbai.
