Bhubaneswar: Onion prices have brought tears to the eyes of consumers once again as it touched Rs 50 per kg in the retail market. The retail prices of onions have surged by 25-50%, with the current cost ranging from Rs 50-70 per kilogram, contingent on the quality.

Just two weeks ago, the price of onions stood in the range of Rs 30 to Rs 35 per kilogram.

This sudden surge in onion prices is primarily attributed to a reduction in onion production. To put the situation into perspective, the cost of a kilogram of onions has now increased by Rs 10, going from Rs 40 to 50.

On a national level, the main onion-producing state, Maharashtra, is witnessing a substantial increase in onion prices. In the Pimpalgaon market, the price of onions per quintal has surged from Rs 2500 to Rs 5000 over the past month.
