Bhubaneswar: In a bid to ensure smooth communication of Jal Sathis, the Odisha Government on Wednesday announced to provide cycle to them.

Attending a skill development programme at Lok Seva Bhavan, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik said that Jal Sathis act as a bridge between water supply department and consumers.

The volunteers of Mission Shakti have been trained to conduct field testing of water quality, facilitating new water connection, regularising connections, meter reading and bill generation, identifying illegal connection and facilitating complaints redressal.

The Jal Sathis have successfully managed the government piped drinking water project in urban areas, which had been launched three years ago under the 5T (Transparency, Teamwork, Technology, Time, Transformation) initiative of Housing and Urban Development Department, Patnaik said.

He further claimed that Odisha is the only State in the country which ensure piped water supply in 85 urban areas out of total 114 towns.

The State has so far 740 jal sathis who manage the water supply of 8.40 lakh consumers. They have also collected Rs 67 cr water tax from the consumers, the CM pointed out.

The Odisha government’s ‘Drink from Pipe’ pogramme has been appreciated not only in national level but also globally.
