Ganjam: Three persons including two kanwariyas were killed after a speeding truck ran over them at NH 16, near Dimiria chhak under Khallikote police limits in Ganjam district on Saturday.
The deceased two kanwariys have been identified as Ranji Nayak (23) and Papu Nayak (22) of the Banpur area in Khurda district. The third one was Banamali Patra of Dalibati village.
Early on Saturday morning, at about 5 o’clock, some kanwariyas from Banapur of Khurda district fetched water from Rushikulya river in Ganjam district and were on their way to the Gupteswar temple in Banapur.
On NH 16, a fish-laden truck that was on its way to Kolkata from Andhra Pradesh hit two of the kanwariyas along with a cycle rider. As a result, they died on the spot. After hitting them, the truck overturned. However, the driver and the helper escaped.
Upon receiving the information, ambulance and fire brigades rushed to the spot and sent the bodies to the Khallikote CHC. Meanwhile, the police seized the truck and detained the truck driver and the helper.
