New Delhi: Veteran Samajwadi Party leader and former Uttar Pradesh Minister Azam Khan was on Thursday awarded a three-year jail term in a hate speech case. However, Khan was granted bail soon after.
A case of hate speech was filed against Khan over his comments against Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath in 2019.
The case was registered against Khan at MilakKotwali in Rampur on April 9, 2019, for allegedly making provocative remarks against Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath and IAS Aunjaneya Kumar Singh, the then DM, under sections 153a (promoting enmity between two groups), 505-1 (statement conducing to public mischief) of IPC along with sections 125 of the Representation of People Act 1951.
Earlier this year, Azam Khan was released from the Sitapur jail after the Supreme Court granted him interim bail in an alleged cheating case. The SP leader faces nearly 90 cases, including that of corruption and theft.
