US To Benefit Thousands Of Indians Waiting For Green Cards

Washington: To benefit tens of thousands of Indians living there, the US has announced it will provide employment authorization cards to some non-immigrant categories, including those waiting for green cards for five years.

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) enhanced the maximum validity duration of Employment Authorization Documents (EAD) for certain noncitizens who must apply for employment authorization to 5 years for initial and renewal EADs.

These include requests for asylum or the withholding of removal, INA 245 status adjustments, and recommendations for suspending or canceling deportation.

It hopes that by extending the maximum EAD validity duration to five years, it would receive much fewer new Forms I-765, Application for Employment Authorization, in the coming years, which will help it cut down on processing times and backlogs.

However, the noncitizen’s underlying status, circumstances, and EAD filing type all play a role in whether or not they keep their job authorization.

According to a recent survey, more than 10.5 lakh Indians are waiting in line for a Green Card based on employment, and 4 lakh of them could pass away before getting the much-desired legal document granting them permanent residency in the US.

A Green Card, often called a Permanent Resident Card, is a legal document given to immigrants in the US as proof that they have been granted permission to live there permanently. The per-country restrictions constrain the number of green cards issued to citizens of particular nations.

1.8 million cases were added to the employment-based Green Card backlog this year.
