Retired BDO, Ex-PEO Get 4-Yr Jail For Embezzling Govt Funds In Koraput

Bhubaneswar: A Vigilance Court in Jeypore today convicted the retired BDO and former PEO of Narayanpatna block in Koraput district for embezzling government funds meant for constructing two Anganwadi Centres.

The retired BDO of Naraynapatna Block, Ramesh Chandra Sahoo, and former PEO, Gourahari Rout, currently posted at Onkadeli GP under Lamtaput Block in Koraput, were charge-sheeted by Odisha Vigilance for misappropriation of Govt. money to the tune of Rs.6 lakh without executing the work for construction of two Anganwadi centres.

The Vigilance Special Judge sentenced them to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 3 years and to pay a fine of Rs.50,000 each and in default of payment of the fine, to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 6 months each for the offence U/s 13(2) r/w 13(1)(c)(d) of PC Act, 1988.

The Court further sentenced them to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 4 years and to pay a fine of Rs.1 lakh each and in default of payment of the fine, to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 1 year each for the offence U/s 409 IPC.

The Court also sentenced them to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 6 months and to pay a fine of Rs.5,000 each and in default of payment of fine, to undergo rigorous imprisonment for 1 month each for the offence U/s 120-B IPC.

All the sentences are to run concurrently, the court ruled.

Today, both the convicts, Ramesh Chandra Sahoo and Gourahari Rout were sent to jail custody to serve their sentence.

Odisha Vigilance will now move the competent authority for the stoppage of the pension of Ramesh Chandra Sahoo, OAS-I, Ex-BDO, Naraynapatna Block, Dist-Koraput (Retired) and dismissal of Gourahari Rout, A/p-PEO, Onkadeli GP under Lamtaput Block, Dist-Koraput from service following their conviction.
