Rourkela: National Institute of Technology (NIT) Rourkela hosted an elaborate orientation program on 22nd and 23rd August 2023 to welcome the incoming batch of first-year undergraduate students.
The orientation program kicked off in Bhubaneswar Behera Auditorium and was joined by around 1,000 new students, a few with their parents. Deans, Registrar, HoDs of departments, heads of various units and other academic officers introduced the students to the campus environment, institute and its various functionaries, academic regulation, resources, infrastructure, student clubs and the vibrant community of NIT Rourkela and assured them to guide for a smooth transition to the new life.
Prof. K. Umamaheshwar Rao (Director, NIT Rourkela) congratulated and welcomed the students and highlighted the need for inclusivity and empowerment during his address. He stressed on the proper utilization of resources and the requirement to build valuable skills. He advised the students to focus on health, time and stress management.
He said, “Every obstacle is an opportunity to learn, innovate, and emerge stronger”. He also said that NITR offers many opportunities to grow and learn, and with the implementation of NEP 2020, students must explore their interests, as these 4-5 years will play a significant role in the rest of their lives.
On the evening of 22nd and 23rd August, Institute Counselling Services (ICS) of NIT Rourkela also organised a dynamic and comprehensive orientation program to welcome and guide the incoming batch of first-year students. The event was held on the BBA of the institute’s campus. The event focused on introducing the newcomers to facilities and resources available at NITR to ensure a successful and fulfilling academic journey.
This year, the event was held with the presence of alumni members. Wing Commander (retd.) Samarendra Hota (Batch of 1974 Electrical Engineering) and Dr. Partha Narayan Mishra (Batch of 2014 Civil Engineering) joined the orientation program. Mr. Hota advocated developing moral and ethical principles and a rich cultural and spiritual heritage. Dr. Mishra shared his experiences and insights into navigating the challenges and joys of college life.
During the program, students were provided information on the role of the Institute Counselling Services in nurturing their emotional and psychological well-being. Representatives from the ICS team explained the various ways in which students could seek guidance and assistance.The event concluded with the live screening of Chandrayaan 3 soft landing on the moon.
