Kolkata Knight Riders captain Shreyas Iyer has been fined after his team maintained a slow over rate during their TATA Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 match against Rajasthan Royals at Eden Gardens on April 17.

As it was his team’s first offence of the season under the IPL’s Code of Conduct relating to minimum over rate offences, Iyer was fined Rs 12 lakhs, the Indian Premier League statement read.

In the 31st match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, KKR lost a thrilling contest against RR played at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. RR captain Sanju Samson won the toss and elected to field first, asking KKR to bat.

KKR managed to put up a challenging total of 223/6 in 20 overs, thanks to Sunil Narine’s maiden IPL and T20 hundred. Narine scored 109 runs, comprising 13 fours and six sixes while Angkrish Raghuvanshi (30) and Rinku Singh (20* off 8 balls) also contributed significantly.

In reply, Riyan Parag (34), Yashasvi Jaiswal (19), and Jos Buttler helped RR reach 100 in just 8.2 overs. However, KKR’s Harshit Rana, Varun, and Sunil Narine struck back with two wickets each, and RR slumped to 121/6. Rovman Powell (23) provided some relief to RR, but Jos Buttler turned the tables in the death overs, hammering 96 runs in the last five overs. RR won the game by two wickets on the final ball, with Buttler remaining unbeaten on 107 in 60 balls, including six sixes and nine fours.

After the defeat, KKR captain Shreyas Iyer faced a penalty for maintaining a slow over-rate during the match against RR. The penalty serves as a warning to the teams to adhere to the IPL’s rules, especially the required overrate. Such restrictions are critical to ensuring that the games run smoothly, with set times being followed, which is crucial for both broadcasters and viewers.
