The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded multiple rainfall alerts after a depression formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining coastal areas early Monday.
According to the IMD’s morning bulletin, the system intensified from a well‑marked low pressure and was centred near coastal West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh, close to Kolkata. At 5:30 am, it lay about 80 km west‑southwest of Satkhira (Bangladesh), 160 km southeast of Bankura (West Bengal), and 180 km northeast of Balasore (Odisha).
The depression is expected to move northwestwards toward Jharkhand across Gangetic West Bengal within 24 hours.
The IMD has issued a red warning for Baleshwar, Kendujhar, and Mayurbhanj, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall with the possibility of extremely heavy showers at isolated places.
An orange warning covers 11 districts including Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Jharsuguda, Sambalpur, Debagada, Anugola, and Dhenkanal, where heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places.
Meanwhile, a yellow warning has been issued for Bargarh, Subarnapur, Boudhagada, Puri, Khordha, and Nayagada, with heavy rainfall expected at isolated locations.
Authorities have urged residents to remain alert for flooding, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions, while fishermen are advised to avoid venturing into the sea.
