India secured a nail-biting four-wicket victory over New Zealand in the second T20I at the Hagley Oval on Saturday, extending their series lead to 2-0 in the five-match contest.
Sent into the field after India won the toss, the visitors displayed sharp initial discipline. New Zealand fought hard to post a competitive total of 180/5 from their allotted 20 overs. Glenn Phillips anchored the Black Caps’ innings with a gritty 43 off 70 deliveries, ensuring his team had something substantial to defend on a sporting Christchurch pitch.
In response, India capitalised brilliantly on the powerplay, putting early pressure on the Kiwi bowling attack. Although New Zealand spinners Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell mounted a fierce fightback in the middle overs—with Santner delivering a stellar spell of 4/21—the early damage proved too steep to overcome.
Enter Tilak Varma. The young left-hander played a scintillating knock, smashing a rapid 26-ball 51 that completely shifted the momentum back in India’s favour. Despite looking slightly rusty following a quick turnaround from their previous series against the West Indies, the Men in Blue held their nerve to cross the finish line with four wickets in hand.
With this hard-fought win, India takes a comfortable 2-0 lead in the series, heading into the third match with plenty of momentum.
