'People Like Abhijeet Dipke...': Union Minister Piyush Goyal Takes a Jab at CJP Leader During Berlin Student Interaction

Union Minister Piyush Goyal, during an official visit to Germany and the Netherlands from October 22 to 27, took a lighthearted jab at CJP leader Abhijeet Dipke while interacting with Indian science and technology research students in Berlin.

Brain Drain, China’s Model, and Democratic Hurdles

While discussing government-funded programs aimed at reversing brain drain and bringing top Indian research talent back from abroad, Goyal cited China’s state-sponsored recruitment initiatives targeting overseas academics. When asked if India would adopt a similar policy, Goyal remarked that while it is a good initiative, it highlights the fundamental difference between a dictatorship and a democracy.

”If we do this, then people like Abhijeet Dipke will come and say that it was the government’s job to fund the students, grant scholarships so why should we do it on our own. Am I right or wrong? Unfortunately, such elements will come and mess with our heads. So we have to calibrate our policies from the point of view of our democracy,” Goyal stated.

The minister urged students to think of innovative ideas to attract domestic talent back to India, noting that the pull is not exclusively economic but tied to a sense of duty toward their motherland. Goyal is accompanied on his European tour by a delegation of roughly 100 Indian businesses and startups.

Challenging Europe’s Climate Stance

Earlier at the Berlin Global Dialogue 2026, Goyal challenged Europe’s climate stance during a question-and-answer session, arguing that developed nations bear primary historical responsibility for the climate crisis. Pointing out that India supports 17% of the global population while contributing less than 3% of cumulative carbon emissions, Goyal criticized protectionist measures like the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and high import tariffs on steel, warning that such policies would drive up the cost of living in developed economies.
