Five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions Mumbai Indians have appointed former West Indies all-rounder Kieron Pollard as their new head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The franchise confirmed Pollard’s elevation on Saturday, following the departure of former head coach Mahela Jayawardene.
From Iconic All-Rounder to Head Coach
Since announcing his retirement from IPL playing duties in November 2022, Pollard served as Mumbai Indians’ batting coach. His promotion to head coach marks the continuation of a 16-year association with the franchise.
As a player, Pollard spent 13 seasons representing the Blue and Gold, scoring 3,412 runs and taking 69 wickets across 189 matches, while playing an instrumental role in all five of Mumbai Indians’ IPL title victories.
Tasked With Rebuilding Franchise Success
Pollard takes charge at a crucial juncture as Mumbai Indians seek to reverse a six-year title drought. During the IPL 2026 season, Mumbai finished ninth on the points table, securing just four victories in 14 matches. The franchise had previously finished bottom of the standings in 2024 before making the playoffs in 2025 under captain Hardik Pandya.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the role, Pollard highlighted his deep bond with the team and supporters:
”It is an honour to take on the role of Head Coach of the Mumbai Indians. MI has been a huge part of my life and career, and the bond I share with this team, the players and the Paltan means a great deal to me. Having experienced this journey as a player and then as a coach, I understand what the Mumbai Indians stand for and the responsibility that comes with representing the Blue and Gold,” Pollard said.
”I am grateful to Mrs. Nita Ambani, Akash Ambani and the entire MI family for their trust in me. I look forward to working closely with the players and support staff, building on the team’s legacy, helping our talent grow and giving the Paltan many more reasons to celebrate,” he added.
