Another inmate at Jharpada Special Jail in Bhubaneswar tested HIV-positive, raising the total number of infected prisoners to nine.

The latest case surfaced after Khandagiri Police arrested an accused and sent him to judicial custody. During mandatory medical screening, doctors confirmed the infection.

The detection followed earlier reports of eight HIV-positive inmates in the same jail, sparking concern among prisoners and health officials. Jail authorities began treatment for all affected inmates inside the facility.

Medical teams placed the eight previously identified inmates under continuous supervision. A psychologist visits them daily for counselling, and they receive antiretroviral therapy (ART) medicines to manage the infection.

The new case added urgency to the ongoing health monitoring program. Officials said the infected inmates remain stable and continue treatment under strict medical observation.

Similar cases emerged at Choudwar Circle Jail in Kataka district earlier this month, where five inmates tested HIV-positive during routine screening. The group included two convicted prisoners and three undertrials.

Authorities shifted the infected inmates at Choudwar Jail to a separate ward. A doctor and two pharmacists monitor their health daily and ensure uninterrupted ART medication.

The rising number of HIV-positive inmates across Odisha prisons underscores the need for stronger health surveillance and preventive measures.
