Addressing a press meet, DCP Singh said that for the last few months, a particular gang was involved in a series of house burglaries in Dhauli, Badagada, Laxmi Sagar, Airport and Air Field  Police Station areas and committing crimes with the same modus operandi.

After analysing the available CCTV footage of different spots, it was apparently clear that they were wearing ‘Chaddi and Baniyaan’, with the rest apparel tied on their waist and covered faces with clothes at the time of committing a crime, he said.

They were entering into houses by breaking open the window grills using house-breaking instruments and were mostly operating between 2 AM to 4 AM at night. They neither use any vehicle nor mobile phones. Observing the Modus Operandi the gang had adopted, it became apparently clear that this group belonged to the notorious “CHADDI and BANIYAAN” group or “KACHHA and Baniyan” group also known as “CHADI and GANJI” group, the DCP stated.

“The gang members speak in Hindi and in their local dialect. They are furnishing names and addresses which seem to be false. They are vagabonds with no definite place of stay or address locally known as “BANJARAS“.  They belong to a group of a well-organized interstate criminal gang known as ‘Chaddi and Baniyaan Gang’ who professionally commit housebreaking and burglary/robbery/ dacoity in night hour,” the Bhubaneswar DCP said.

DCP Singh further stated that the gang has been active in Odisha for the last year and the members were staying as a group at Bhubaneswar railway station and some time at Cuttack and Puri railway stations.

In the daytime, they wander here and there as labourers and in the late hour of the night commit crimes. They avail auto as transportation to nearby areas and bus and train for long-distance areas where they commit crimes. They move out of their place of stay in a group prepared with house-breaking instruments, sharp cutting weapons wearing full-clad dresses on the way, they change their dress & wear only Chadgi and Baniyaan, tie their other apparel on the waistline, and move without footwear by covering their faces with clothes from a short distance of the place of crime, the police official said.

Modus Operandi:

  • The members of the notorious ‘Chaddi-Baniyaan’ gang usually target colonies close to roads, newly developed, less-lighted areas and choose footpaths to reach their target houses.
  • They use big-size screwdrivers, sly wrenches, and specially designed house-breaking instruments made of iron for breaking door locks, and window grills and enter into the residential houses in the late hour of the night after 01 A.M.
  • They break the cupboards, Almirahs, boxes and loot gold ornaments, cash and other valuables.
  • They also keep the house inmates sleeping in the rooms confined by locking and bolting the doors from outside.
  • After the crime, they decamp by changing their dress and availing vehicles plying on the road and pretending as labourers.
  • Deliberately they never bring mobile phones to the place of crime to avoid leaving a digital footprint.
  • They dispose of robbed articles to different persons, shopkeepers, and jewellery shops for their gain.

According to a press note issued by the  Commissionerate Police, the accused were wanted in six cases in the Dhauli police station area, two each in Badagada & Laxmi Sagar police station areas, four in the Airfield police station area, and one each in Tamando & Pipili police station areas.

They are an intra-national gang and might be wanted in cases of other states of India which is a part of further investigation. In Odisha they are involved in many cases of Khurda, Puri, Bhadrak and other districts which are under verification, the CP press note added.
