Mumbai: On the 85th birth anniversary of famous actress Meena Kumari, Google on Wednesday dedicated a special doodle featuring her in a red sari.
Meena Kumari was known as ‘The Tragedy Queen’. Her real name was Mahjabeen Bano. In her 33 years of journey in the Indian cinema, she starred in about 92 films.
She made her debut in the film industry as a child actor at the age of four. She has given many hits, but most famous are Guru Dutt’s ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ and ‘Pakeezah’.
Meena Kumari won four Filmfare Awards in the Best Actress category. She was the recipient of the inaugural Filmfare Awards (1954) Best Actress Award for Baiju Bawra and had a consecutive win in the second Filmfare Awards (1955) for Parineeta.
She got her major achievement when she achieved three slots for the award of ‘Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam’ and ‘Kaajal’ in the year 1963. This was the first time when India officially entered for the Oscars.
The actress was married to filmmaker and screenwriter Kamal Amrohi . However, at the age of 38 the legend passed away on March 31, 1972 due to liver cirrhosis.
