A training programme on “Online Safety for Children” was conducted in Bhubaneswar for District Education Officers (DEOs) and ADEOs (Academic), aiming to strengthen awareness and institutional response to digital risks faced by children.
The workshop was organised in collaboration with the Odisha State Commission for Protection of Child Rights and ChildFund India, with participation from around 80 officials representing key institutions, including Odisha School Education Programme Authority and the School & Mass Education Department.
Focus on Digital Safety and Awareness
In the inaugural session, Babita Patra underscored the increasing importance of safeguarding children in the digital space. She highlighted the responsibility of the education system in addressing online threats and ensuring child protection.
N. Thirumala Naik, Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the School & Mass Education Department, commended the initiative and stressed the need for widespread awareness among students and parents to prevent online exploitation.
Integrating Online Safety in Education
Ananya Das emphasised the importance of incorporating online safety education into school curricula. She recommended adopting interactive and game-based learning approaches to make the subject engaging and accessible for children.
Adding to this, Sangita Behera highlighted the role of institutions like OSEPA and OSCPCR in developing effective strategies to combat online abuse and ensure safer digital environments for children.
Insights from Field Research
Shrabanti Sen presented findings from a pilot project conducted in Kendrapada on children’s online safety. The study identified key risks and stressed the need for coordinated efforts among departments such as Home, School & Mass Education, and Women & Child Development.
Participation and Coordination
The workshop witnessed participation from senior officials and members of OSCPCR and OSEPA, including Manasmita Khuntia, Kasturi Mishra, Chandana Das, Dr. Santosh Kumar Rout, and Prachi Tanaya Giri.
The programme was coordinated by Smruti Prajna Priyadarshini, while Naveen delivered the vote of thanks.
Strengthening Child Protection Framework
The initiative reflects Odisha’s growing emphasis on safeguarding children in an increasingly digital world. Experts at the workshop reiterated that collaboration between government bodies, educators, and civil society is essential to build a secure online ecosystem for children.
