Congress withdrew its candidate, Akash More, from the Baramati bypoll, clearing the path for NCP president and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar to secure an unopposed victory.
The decision followed repeated requests from NCP leaders and appeals for consensus in the constituency.
Congress state president Harshvardhan Sapkal announced the withdrawal on Thursday, the last day for nomination withdrawals. Initially, More was set to contest against Sunetra Pawar in the April 23 bypoll. The move marks a significant moment in Baramati’s electoral history, as no rival candidates remain in the fray.
Baramati, long considered the Pawar family’s stronghold, witnessed dramatic developments after the untimely demise of Ajit Pawar. He represented the constituency eight times, cementing its importance in Maharashtra politics.
NCP MP Supriya Sule urged for an unopposed election, calling it a gesture of respect and unity to honour Ajit Pawar. Sharad Pawar also supported the idea, stating that while Congress had the right to contest, an uncontested election would best reflect consensus.
Reports indicated that Sunetra Pawar personally reached out to Sapkal twice since April 6, requesting a withdrawal to ensure an unopposed election. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also contacted Sapkal, seeking his support for a consensus.
