A tragic accident in Uttar Pradesh’s Hamirpur district claimed the lives of six workers after a section of an under-construction bridge collapsed during severe weather conditions early Friday morning, officials said.

The incident occurred around 3 am near Morakandar Parsani village in the Lalpura area, where a bridge over the Betwa river was being constructed to connect the village with Naithi in the Kurara region.

According to officials, strong winds and heavy rainfall swept through the area late Thursday night. Several labourers reportedly took shelter beneath and around the bridge structure to protect themselves from the storm when a concrete slab suddenly gave way and collapsed on them.

Police officials, district authorities, and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams rushed to the site soon after the incident and launched a rescue operation.

Three workers were also stranded on one of the bridge pillars after the collapse. Rescue teams worked continuously to bring them to safety while clearing debris from the site.

Victims Identified

Authorities identified the deceased as:

  • Lokendra Nishad, 22
  • Kuldeep Nishad, 19
  • Sawant Yadav, 28
  • Sabhajeet, 30
  • Pushpendra Singh Chauhan, 34
  • Rajesh Pal, 42

The victims belonged to different parts of Hamirpur and Banda districts in Uttar Pradesh.

Officials confirmed that at least three other workers sustained injuries in the accident and were shifted to nearby medical facilities for treatment.

Rescue Operations Continue

Rescue and search operations remained underway through Friday morning as authorities assessed the extent of the damage and searched for any additional trapped workers.

The collapse has raised fresh concerns over construction safety standards and worker protection at infrastructure project sites, especially during adverse weather conditions.

District administration officials said a detailed investigation would be conducted to determine the exact cause of the collapse and whether safety protocols were properly followed during the construction work.

The bridge project was considered an important connectivity link for villages located along the Betwa river region.

Further details are awaited as authorities continue rescue efforts and structural assessments at the accident site.
