International Wildlife Racket Hits Odisha: STF Clueless as Orangutan Smuggling Investigation Stalls

A month after the dramatic rescue of five baby orangutans from the Bichitrapur mangrove forest in Balasore district, the Special Task Force (STF) of the Odisha Crime Branch appears to have hit a wall.

Despite initial momentum, the investigation spanning Odisha and West Bengal has ground to a halt, raising concerns that the state is fast turning into a safe transit route for international wildlife trafficking.

Mastermind Eludes Law Enforcement

The prime suspect and alleged mastermind behind the operation, Jayanta Maiti, alongside his son, remains at large. Efforts by the STF to apprehend the duo or secure concrete evidence against them have proven futile. While interrogations were conducted with employees at Maiti’s hotel and his family members, investigators failed to gather actionable leads.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the exotic primates were trafficked from abroad into West Bengal before being brought to Maiti’s hotel in Digha. Subsequently, they were moved to the secluded Bichitrapur forest area, where an illegal trade operation is believed to have been underway for nearly ten days. Authorities suspect that traffickers leveraged Balasore’s vast coastline and forest patches via sea routes to bypass local security networks.

National Links and Systemic Failure

This incident is not isolated. Similar exotic wildlife rescues have been reported across India in recent years, including:

  • 2022: Two orangutans rescued in Cachar district, Assam.
  • October 2023: Rescues reported from Mizoram.
  • November 2024: Baby orangutans intercepted in Thane district, Maharashtra.

While inter-state linkages between these syndicates are strongly suspected, joint operations involving the Odisha STF and police forces from neighboring states have yielded little progress. Experts warn that unless this international crime network is neutralized quickly, Odisha risks becoming a preferred corridor for transnational exotic species smuggling.

Indonesian Expert Team Granted Permission to Visit Nandankanan

In a significant developments, the Government of India has approved a proposal from the Indonesian government to dispatch a 7-member expert team to Odisha.

The rescued orangutans are currently housed at Nandankanan Zoological Park in Bhubaneswar. However, their exact geographic origin remains wrapped in mystery, as the Odisha Forest Department has been unable to trace their genetic lineage.

The visiting Indonesian delegation—comprising wildlife experts and veterinary doctors—will work alongside Indian authorities to:

  • Genetic Mapping: Conduct research to pinpoint the specific origin and species variant of the rescued infants.
  • Health Assessment: Evaluate the physical health, nutritional needs, and rehabilitation environment of the animals.
  • Bilateral Coordination: Assist ongoing government-level dialogue between India and Indonesia regarding exotic species repatriation and welfare protocols.

Until the investigation catches momentum, the arrival of international experts remains the best hope for ensuring the survival of the rescued primates and deciphering their journey into India.
