The Supreme Court is set to hear a public interest litigation (PIL) challenging the Odisha government’s process of appointing the next Director General of Police (DGP).
A three‑judge bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi, and Justice V. Mohan will take up the matter. The petition, filed by Jayant Das of Baleshwar, alleges that the State failed to follow the apex court’s 2006 directions in the landmark Prakash Singh case, which laid down procedures for DGP appointments.
During earlier hearings, the court’s amicus curiae Raju Ramachandran flagged transparency concerns and submitted two reports questioning the State’s decision to promote two ADG‑rank officers to DGP rank for inclusion in the selection panel.
The case is expected to test the balance between state discretion and adherence to Supreme Court‑mandated police reforms, with implications for governance and law enforcement leadership in Odisha.
