A technical committee of wildlife experts on Tuesday inspected the hand‑rearing centre at Nandankanan Zoological Park to evaluate the condition of five juvenile orangutans rescued from Balasore district.
Constituted by the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), Odisha, the panel included Dr Sashidhar and Dr Madan from Mysore Zoo and Dr Aditya Acharya of OUAT’s Centre for Wildlife Health (CWH). The inspection was conducted in the presence of the Zoo Director, Deputy Director Pradeep Mirase, and senior veterinary staff.
Following strict biosecurity protocols, the experts entered the quarantine enclosure and carried out physical examinations of all five orangutans. The committee will continue discussions and submit a detailed report with recommendations to the authorities.
The orangutans, kept under quarantine since their rescue from Balasore’s coastal forest, are under round‑the‑clock video surveillance and receiving specialised veterinary care and nursing support.
