Sonepur DHH Ophthalmologist Caught Taking Bribe To Perform Cataract Surgery

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha Vigilance on Monday apprehended an Ophthalmologist of Sonepur District Head Quarters Hospital while taking bribe from the family member of a patient to conduct cataract surgery.

Dr. Sanjib Kumar Kar, Ophthalmologist at Sonepur DHH has been apprehended by Odisha Vigilance while demanding and accepting a bribe of Rs 5,500 from a complainant for conducting cataract surgery on his uncle, the Vigilance said.

The said surgery is done free of cost in government-run hospitals across the State, but Dr Kar was demanding bribes from patients for doing the surgery. The complainant, being a poor man, requested Dr Kar several times to do the cataract surgery for his uncle, who is an ailing old man and an octogenarian, but he insisted on the bribe amount to be paid before the surgery.

Finding no other way, the complainant informed to the Vigilance Authority about the matter. Today, Dr. Kar was nabbed by the Vigilance team while accepting the bribe from the complainant.

The entire bribe money has been recovered from the accused Dr Kar and seized. Following the trap, simultaneous searches are going on at 3 locations of Dr Kar in Bolangir and Subarnapur districts, the Vigilance said.

In this connection, Sambalpur Vigilance PS Case No 30 dt. 26.11.2023 u/s 7 P.C. Amendment Act, 2018 has been registered. An investigation is in progress against the accused Dr. Sanjib Ku. Kar, the Vigilance added.
