New Delhi: Former Team India and Mumbai Indians batsman, Saurabh Tiwary has announced his retirement from professional cricket at the age of 34.

The left-handed batsman made the announcement a few days before the start of Jharkhand’s last Ranji Trophy game of the season. Saurabh will take the field for the final time against Rajasthan at his home ground in Jamshedpur.

Tiwary, who made his First-Class debut in 2006, was a part of India’s Under-19 side that won the 2008 World Cup under Virat Kohli.

Tiwary scored 49 runs in the three ODIs that he played for the country in 2010. He amassed 8030 runs in 189 innings at an average of 47.51 including 22 hundreds and 34 fifties in 115 first-class matches.

He also scored 1494 runs at an average of 28.73 and a strike rate of 120 in 93 IPL matches. In total, he racked up 3454 T20 runs with 16 fifties at an average of 29.02 and a strike rate of 122.17 in 181 matches. He also captained Jharkhand 88 times across all formats and won 36, lost 33 and drew 19.

“It’s a little tough to bid farewell to this journey that I had started before my schooling, but I’m also sure that this is the right time for this. I feel that if you’re not in the national team and IPL, it’s better to vacate a spot in the state side for a youngster. Youngsters are getting a lot of chances in our Test team so I’m making this decision.” Saurabh Tiwary said in a press conference.
