Russia has offered to increase its supply of oil and natural gas to India during high-level bilateral talks held in New Delhi.
The proposal comes at a time when global energy markets are facing disruption due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in West Asia.
The discussions took place during a meeting between Denis Manturov and Indian leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar.
Focus on Energy, Trade, and Strategic Cooperation
During the talks, both sides explored opportunities to strengthen cooperation in key sectors such as energy, fertilisers, trade, and connectivity.
Prime Minister Modi highlighted the importance of continued collaboration following discussions held during the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India last year.
Jaishankar also confirmed that both countries reviewed progress in bilateral ties and explored new opportunities in technology, innovation, and critical minerals.
Energy Security in Focus Amid Strait of Hormuz Crisis
The offer from Russia comes as India navigates supply disruptions caused by tensions in West Asia, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz—a crucial route for global oil and gas shipments.
According to the Russian side, its companies have the capacity to steadily increase oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies to meet India’s growing energy demands.
This development is significant as India seeks stable and diversified energy sources to cushion the impact of global volatility.
Fertiliser and Industrial Cooperation Strengthened
In addition to energy, Russia reported a 40% increase in fertiliser exports to India by the end of 2025. Both countries are also working on a joint carbamide production project to further strengthen agricultural support.
The discussions included expanding cooperation in trade, industrial development, and investment, with both sides aiming to improve bilateral trade volumes.
Nuclear Energy and Defence Ties Continue to Grow
India and Russia are also deepening collaboration in nuclear energy, particularly through the ongoing development of reactors at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant.
On the defence front, India’s acquisition of additional S-400 air defence systems was also highlighted as part of ongoing strategic cooperation.
Global Context and Strategic Importance
Russia has recently re-emerged as one of India’s largest energy suppliers, aided by policy flexibility in global sanctions. The latest offer underscores Moscow’s intent to strengthen its long-term partnership with New Delhi.
The talks also covered broader global developments, including the ongoing conflict in West Asia, which continues to influence energy markets and international trade.
As global energy uncertainty persists, Russia’s proposal to expand oil and gas exports provides India with an opportunity to reinforce its energy security. The discussions signal a continued strengthening of India-Russia relations across multiple strategic sectors, including energy, defence, and industrial cooperation.
