Abhishek Sharma has been fined 25% of his match fees and handed one demerit point for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during a high-intensity IPL 2026 match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens.

The incident occurred after Abhishek showed visible dissent following his dismissal, which was confirmed after an on-field review.

Reason Behind the Penalty

Abhishek appeared unconvinced about the catch taken by Varun Chakravarthy and reacted with frustration. He remained at the crease briefly and gestured before walking back to the pavilion.

According to the IPL’s official statement:

  • Abhishek admitted to a Level 1 offence under Article 2.3
  • He accepted the match referee’s decision
  • The penalty includes a 25% fine and one demerit point

For Level 1 breaches, the match referee’s decision is final and binding.

Match Performance Highlights

Despite the controversy, Abhishek delivered an impressive performance with the bat. He scored 48 runs, narrowly missing a half-century, and contributed to a strong opening partnership.

He and Travis Head added 82 runs in just 34 balls, giving Sunrisers Hyderabad a powerful start.

Key contributions included:

  • Travis Head: 46 runs
  • Abhishek Sharma: 48 runs
  • Heinrich Klaasen: 52 runs
  • Nitish Kumar Reddy: 39 runs

SRH posted a formidable total of 226/8 in 20 overs.

Bowling and Match Outcome

Blessing Muzarabani was the standout performer for KKR with four wickets, while Vaibhav Arora picked up two.

In response, Kolkata Knight Riders struggled to keep up with the required run rate and were bowled out for 161 in 16 overs.

Top performances for KKR and SRH included:

  • Angkrish Raghuvanshi: 52 runs (KKR)
  • Jaydev Unadkat: 3 wickets
  • Nitish Kumar Reddy: 2 wickets
  • Eshan Malinga: 2 wickets

Sunrisers Hyderabad secured a convincing victory, marking their first win of the IPL 2026 season.
