Kanpur: An Odia researcher committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan inside her hostel room at IIT Kanpur on Tuesday.
The deceased has been identified as Pallavi Chilka (34), hailed from Cuttack district of Odisha. She was a research staff member in the Department of Biological Sciences and Bioengineering of the institute.
According to reports, the death was revealed when the cleaning staff knocked at her door late in the afternoon and there was no response. The person peeped inside and found her hanging from the ceiling fan.
On intimation, police reached the spot and seized the body for post-mortem. The exact cause of the death is yet to be ascertained. However, it is suspected that depression might have the cause behind suicide. A police forensic team has visited the campus to ascertain the reason for the death.
