Netflix K-Drama Sparks Global Outrage: Why ‘Teach You a Lesson’ Became Korea’s Most Controversial Show

Netflix’s latest Korean drama Teach You a Lesson has become one of the most talked-about and controversial releases of 2026. Even before its premiere, the series faced criticism over its source material, casting decisions and sensitive themes surrounding race, school violence and education.

Based on the popular but highly divisive webtoon Get Schooled, the drama premiered on June 5 and immediately reignited debates that have followed the franchise for years.

Why Is ‘Teach You a Lesson’ Controversial?

The controversy began in 2023 when the original webtoon Get Schooled faced international backlash over a storyline involving a Korean-American teacher and a mixed-race student.

Readers accused the creators of promoting harmful racial stereotypes and offensive portrayals of multicultural communities. The criticism quickly spread online, prompting WEBTOON to remove the series from its North American platform and issue a public apology.

The creators later admitted that although they intended to highlight discrimination faced by multicultural families in South Korea, the execution was insensitive and caused genuine harm to readers.

As a result, the Korean version of the webtoon was placed on indefinite hiatus.

Kim Nam Gil Rejected the Role

The adaptation faced another challenge when reports emerged that popular actor Kim Nam Gil had been offered the lead role of Na Hwa Jin, the strict school supervisor at the center of the story.

The casting rumors immediately triggered criticism from fans who urged the actor not to associate himself with the controversial project.

Addressing the speculation, Kim Nam Gil publicly stated that he carefully considered the offer but ultimately chose not to participate.

Later, during a press event, the actor explained that audience concerns played a major role in his decision.

He emphasized that if viewers were uncomfortable with a project, declining such roles was the responsible choice.

Kim Mu Yeol Steps Into the Lead Role

Following Kim Nam Gil’s exit, actor Kim Mu Yeol took over the lead role.

Despite the controversy, the actor remained focused on the project itself and expressed hope that audiences would evaluate the drama based on its final content rather than its troubled history.

Following the show’s release, clips of Kim Mu Yeol’s performance quickly gained attention on social media and generated significant online discussion.

Teachers Raise Concerns Over School Violence

The original webtoon also faced criticism from educators and social commentators.

Many argued that the story appeared to justify harsh disciplinary methods and physical punishment as solutions to school problems.

Teachers’ organizations expressed concern that the narrative could glorify violence and present unrealistic solutions to complex issues such as bullying, classroom management and youth crime.

Critics argued that schools require long-term reforms rather than vigilante-style interventions.

Director Says Most Controversial Elements Were Removed

Director Hong Jong Chan, known for the acclaimed legal drama Juvenile Justice, acknowledged the challenges involved in adapting such a controversial story.

According to the director, the production team intentionally removed many of the webtoon’s most divisive themes and approached the adaptation with caution.

He explained that the goal was not to exaggerate problems but to reflect real-life struggles faced by students, teachers and parents.

The director also clarified that the Educational Rights Protection Bureau (ERPB) featured in the drama is entirely fictional and should not be viewed as a real-world policy proposal.

What Is ‘Teach You a Lesson’ About?

The series imagines a dystopian version of South Korea where schools have lost control over discipline.

Teachers are portrayed as powerless due to pressure from influential parents and legal restrictions. In this environment, student gangs dominate school campuses, creating a culture of bullying, intimidation and violence.

To restore order, the government establishes the Educational Rights Protection Bureau (ERPB), a special task force tasked with handling severe cases of school misconduct.

Leading the unit is former Special Forces officer Na Hwa Jin, played by Kim Mu Yeol. He is joined by field agent Im Han Rim and digital investigator Bong Geun Dae as they confront escalating school-related crimes.

Why The Debate Continues

While supporters argue that the drama raises important questions about education and discipline, critics believe the series still carries problematic ideas inherited from its source material.

The ongoing debate reflects broader concerns about racism, representation, school violence and how sensitive social issues should be portrayed in entertainment.

Whether viewed as a bold social commentary or a controversial adaptation, Teach You a Lesson has already become one of Netflix’s most debated K-dramas of the year.

The 10-episode series is currently streaming worldwide on Netflix.
