Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi announced an increase in financial assistance for the families of Odia workers who died in the Tamil Nadu ammonia gas leak tragedy, raising the ex-gratia amount from Rs 4 lakh to Rs 10 lakh per victim.

The Chief Minister expressed profound grief over the deaths of seven Odia workers in the incident at a seafood processing factory in Tiruvallur district. He conveyed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and directed officials to ensure the timely disbursement of relief from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).

The tragedy claimed seven lives, including Sajani Juang of Kodipasha village under Sadar police limits in Keonjhar district. She succumbed while undergoing treatment, adding to the earlier toll of six Odia workers who lost their lives after exposure to toxic ammonia gas.

The gas leak occurred at a private seafood processing and export unit in Kannigaipair village near Periyapalayam, Tiruvallur. The leak from the factory’s refrigeration system exposed several workers to hazardous fumes, causing severe respiratory distress.

The Odisha government has deputed a team to Tamil Nadu to coordinate relief and assist affected workers. The Chief Minister’s decision to enhance compensation reflects the state’s commitment to supporting families of migrant workers who face tragic circumstances outside Odisha.
