All schools from Class I to XII in seven blocks of Mayurbhanj district will remain closed on September 26 amid a forecast of heavy rainfall, according to an order issued by the district administration.
The closure applies to government, government-aided and private schools in Thakurmunda, Kaptipada, Udala, Gopabandhunagar, Khunta, Barasahi and Betnoti blocks.
Schools closed amid heavy rain forecast
The Mayurbhanj District Education Officer (DEO) ordered the closure as a precautionary measure following the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast of heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Odisha.
Authorities have advised residents to remain alert and follow local administration updates as rainfall conditions develop.
IMD issues orange, yellow warnings
The IMD has issued an orange warning for heavy to very heavy rainfall at one or two places in Sundargarh, Jharsuguda, Bargarh, Sambalpur, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Nuapada and Nabarangpur on September 26.
A yellow warning has also been issued for heavy rainfall in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghapur, Kataka, Debagarh, Anugola, Dhenkanal, Subarnapur, Balangir, Kalahandi, Rayagada, Koraput and Malkangiri.
Depression to weaken into low-pressure area
According to the IMD, the depression over South Odisha and adjoining South Chhattisgarh is likely to continue moving north-northwestwards while maintaining its intensity during the next 12 hours.
The system is then expected to weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area during the subsequent 12 hours.
The weather system and its associated rainfall are being closely monitored as authorities take precautionary measures in vulnerable areas.
