In a bold push to transform Odisha into India’s next sports powerhouse, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi graced the concluding day of the ‘Chintan Shivir’ organised by the Sports & Youth Services Department.
The two-day brainstorming camp, the first of its kind in the state, aims to craft a comprehensive roadmap for revolutionary change in Odisha’s sports ecosystem — from grassroots to global glory.
Addressing the gathering, CM Majhi declared that sports are far more than medals and records. “It teaches discipline, teamwork and the courage to face adversity,” he said, adding that the camp’s outcomes will shape a future where Odisha is not just a top event organiser but a consistent producer of world champions. “By 2036, our athletes will shine brightly on the global champions list,” he asserted.
Key highlights of the ambitious roadmap include:
- Massive grassroots investment: Over ₹4,000 crore will be spent at the block level to build state-of-the-art multi-purpose stadiums in every block, strengthening sports infrastructure right at the grassroots.
- Mukhyamantri Trophy: A dedicated talent hunt to scout and nurture emerging stars from rural and tribal areas.
- Iconic new facility: A ₹1,000-crore multi-purpose sports complex coming up at Gothapatana.
- Global events: Odisha will host the prestigious World Athletics Silver competition this year, building on the success of last year’s Bronze-level event. In 2028, the state will stage the World Athletics Championships and the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships.
The Chief Minister emphasised the mantra “Happy Coaches, Happy Athletes, Happy Achievers” and positioned sports as a key driver of Odisha’s growth engine for a prosperous state by 2036 and a developed India by 2047.
Sports & Youth Services Minister Suryabanshi Suraj struck an emotional chord: “The flower that blooms in the forest should no longer wither unseen. It is time for our ‘ban malli’ (forest flower) to fragrance the world stage.”
The camp brought together national and international sports experts, administrators and athletes, including Hockey India President Padma Shri Dilip Tirkey, Commissioner-cum-Secretary Bhupendra Singh Poonia, Sports Director Dr Yedulla Vijay, and other dignitaries. Additional Chief Secretary Bijay Kumar Swain delivered the vote of thanks.
