An 18-year-old NEET aspirant from Odisha died by suicide in Ambedkar Colony, Vigyan Nagar area on Thursday night in Rajasthan’s Kota district. The student’s body was found hanging in his PG room.
The deceased has been identified as Abhijeet Giri from Mayurbhanj district in Odisha.
Abhijeet had come to Kota to prepare for the National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET) at a coaching institute since April 2024 and was living in Vigyan Nagar. Officials said that no suicide note was recovered from the room. The incident occurred in Ambedkar Colony, Vigyan Nagar area on Thursday night.
The incident came to light around 8 pm when a mess worker went to deliver food to Abhijeet’s room, a police officer said.
Police reached the spot after receiving information and the body was taken to hospital. The deceased’s family was informed, and the body has been kept at a hospital mortuary. A post-mortem will be conducted once the family arrives in Kota, police said.
This is the third such case in Kota in just 17 days. Last week, two students preparing for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) died by suicide in their PG rooms in two separate incidents. No suicide notes were found. While one was from Haryana, the other belonged to Madhya Pradesh.
On January 8, a 20-year-old JEE aspirant, Abhishek, allegedly died by suicide by hanging himself from a ceiling fan in his PG room in Kota. He was a resident of Guna in Madhya Pradesh and had been preparing for the JEE at a coaching institute in Kota since May 2023.
On Jan 7, another JEE aspirant from Haryana, identified as Neeraj (19), was found hanging in his hostel room.
