Torrential monsoon rain continued to batter Mumbai on Thursday, causing widespread waterlogging, traffic congestion, and delays in local train services. Amid the severe weather, a man lost his life after reportedly falling into an open manhole on Khairani Road, highlighting growing safety concerns during the ongoing downpour.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across Mumbai and its suburbs through the day, with the possibility of extremely heavy showers late Thursday night and early Friday. Gusty winds of 50–60 kmph are also expected.
Man Dies After Falling Into Open Manhole
According to officials, the incident occurred on Khairani Road, which connects Andheri, Saki Naka, Jogeshwari, Kurla, and Ghatkopar.
The victim reportedly fell into an open manhole during heavy rain. His umbrella and slippers were recovered from the spot. Rescue teams, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, and emergency services, launched a search operation before authorities confirmed his death.
Preliminary reports indicate that the manhole cover had been removed for maintenance work being carried out by a private contractor.
The incident has renewed concerns over public safety during Mumbai’s monsoon season, especially around uncovered drains and flooded roads.
Heavy Rain Floods Several Parts of Mumbai
Heavy rainfall since early Thursday morning inundated several low-lying areas, making travel difficult for thousands of commuters.
Among the worst-affected locations were:
- Dadar
- Parel
- Hindmata
- Charkop
- Worli

- Andheri
Waterlogging slowed vehicular movement across the city and caused traffic congestion on several major roads.
Local Train Services Face Delays
Mumbai’s suburban railway network also experienced disruptions due to water accumulation near railway tracks.
Many commuters reported delays of 10 to 15 minutes during the morning rush hour, leading to overcrowded platforms and trains.
Railway officials, however, said train operations continued and services remained largely functional despite the challenging weather conditions.

The BMC has advised residents to remain alert, avoid flooded roads, and follow official weather advisories.
Authorities are closely monitoring the situation as the city braces for another spell of intense monsoon rainfall.
