Far-right political activist Laura Loomer has drawn widespread criticism after posting messages on social media that appeared to encourage military action during the funeral of former Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Her comments come at a time of heightened tensions between the United States, Israel, and Iran, adding to an already volatile geopolitical environment.
Laura Loomer’s Posts Trigger Backlash
Loomer reacted to reports about Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s upcoming funeral by writing, “That’s what we call a target-rich environment,” alongside a bomb emoji.
In another post, she tagged the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) and wrote, “The IDF has the opportunity to do the funniest thing.”
She later added that she would support military action by either the United States or Israel against what she described as “jihadis,” prompting strong reactions across social media platforms.
Her remarks have been widely shared and criticised for appearing to endorse violence during a public funeral ceremony.
Longtime Trump Ally Known for Hardline Views
Laura Loomer has been a longtime supporter of US President Donald Trump and has frequently taken hardline positions on Iran and Middle East policy.
She has consistently opposed diplomatic engagement with Tehran and has criticised politicians and commentators who favour negotiations over military action.
Loomer has also drawn controversy in the past for her comments about Islam and several prominent political figures, often attracting both support and criticism online.
Funeral Preparations Underway in Iran
According to Iranian state media, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei’s funeral ceremonies are expected to take place in Tehran, Qom, and Mashhad before his burial at the Imam Reza shrine on July 9.
Officials expect millions of people to participate in the ceremonies, which were reportedly postponed for more than three months due to ongoing regional tensions and the observance of Muharram.
Khamenei was reportedly killed in US airstrikes on February 28 during military operations targeting Tehran. Iranian reports said members of his family were also killed in the attack.
Following his death, Mojtaba Khamenei succeeded him as Iran’s Supreme Leader.
Regional Tensions Remain High
The controversy surrounding Loomer’s comments comes as relations between Iran, Israel, and the United States remain fragile despite recent diplomatic efforts aimed at reducing hostilities.
Although a memorandum of understanding has slowed direct military confrontations, political rhetoric surrounding the conflict continues to fuel tensions.
There has been no official response from the Israeli government or US authorities regarding Loomer’s social media posts.
The developments highlight how inflammatory online statements from high-profile political figures can intensify debate during periods of international instability.
