Weather conditions across Odisha are currently experiencing a brief lull as no specific local rain-bearing systems are active over the state. However, the hiatus is expected to be short-lived, with meteorologists predicting a revival of heavy monsoon showers starting September 9, followed by the potential formation of a fresh cyclonic circulation around September 10–12.

According to Dr. Sanjeev Dwivedi, senior scientist at the Regional Meteorological Centre, the monsoon trough currently extends from Sriganganagar through Madhya Pradesh and up to Tripura. Although a well-marked low-pressure area remains active over central regions, its lack of direct influence on Odisha means the state will avoid severe rainfall through September 8.

Yellow Warning Issued for Northern Districts

Rainfall activity is projected to pick up again from September 9 onwards, primarily across the northern belt of the state. The Meteorological Department has issued a Yellow Warning for Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, and Sundargarh districts for September 9 and 10, warning residents and local authorities of localized heavy downpours.

Looking further ahead, prominent meteorologist Dr. Sarat Sahu noted that a fresh cyclonic circulation is likely to take shape over the East-Central Bay of Bengal between September 10 and 12. This system is forecasted to intensify into a low-pressure area by around September 15.

Intensification in the Bay of Bengal

“The upcoming system over the East-Central Bay of Bengal could further intensify into a depression or a deep depression,” said Dr. Sahu. “While a clear picture of its exact movement and ultimate impact will emerge once the cyclonic circulation forms, it is expected to bring heavy rainfall across Northern Odisha and adjoining regions of Jharkhand.”

Between September 8 and 10, scattered rainfall is expected, resulting in a dual weather pattern: near-normal precipitation across northern districts and deficient rainfall in southern pockets.

Above-Average Monsoon Performance

Despite the temporary pause in rainfall, Odisha has recorded robust monsoon activity this season. Since June 1, the state has already experienced 8 distinct low-pressure systems, resulting in 25% excess rainfall compared to historical seasonal averages for this time period.

Local administrations in northern Odisha remain on alert as the upcoming systems threaten to add to the already high rainfall tallies later this month.
