Weather experts have cautioned that Odisha will continue to face severe Kalbaisakhi (Nor’wester storms) until the second week of May.
According to meteorologist Sarat Chandra Sahu, afternoons are expected to witness frequent thunderstorms accompanied by heavy rain, lightning, and strong winds. In some areas, hailstorms may also occur.
Sahu advised residents, particularly farmers, labourers, and outdoor workers, to remain vigilant between 2 PM and evening hours. The storms could uproot trees, damage houses, and pose risks to life and property. The Meteorological Department has indicated that red and orange alerts may be issued during this period.
Experts believe climate change is intensifying these seasonal weather events, which traditionally occur from late March to mid-May.
While the government is stepping up preparedness to minimise losses, citizens are advised to avoid open spaces during lightning, stay away from metallic objects and water bodies, and check rooftops and electrical connections for safety.
Regional weather centres are closely monitoring developments, and helplines remain available for emergencies.
