Authorities at the Hirakud Dam opened five additional sluice gates on Monday, bringing the total number of open gates to seven — five on the left spillway and two on the right. Earlier, two gates had already been opened to release excess floodwater.
According to the daily reservoir update at 8:00 am, the water level stood at 619.00 feet and was rising. The average inflow was recorded at 1,71,478 cusecs, while the average outflow stood at 66,009 cusecs.
Of the total outflow, 31,038 cusecs were discharged through the spillway, 30,633 cusecs via the power channel, and the remainder through irrigation, industrial use, and other channels. The reservoir’s live storage capacity was reported at 2.320 million acre‑feet, amounting to 59% of its full capacity.
Meanwhile, power generation from Burla and Chiplima power houses stood at 271.875 MW, reflecting the increased water release.
Dam authorities confirmed that the situation is being closely monitored amid ongoing rainfall, with flood management protocols in place to balance inflow and outflow.
