Odisha is bracing for another spell of heavy rainfall as a cyclonic circulation over northwest Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a low‑pressure area.
The Regional Meteorological Centre has warned of widespread showers across northern, coastal, and interior districts over the next few days.
Currently, a low‑pressure system is active over Jharkhand and adjoining areas, causing scattered rainfall in Odisha and Chhattisgarh. From August 27, the system is likely to strengthen, bringing heavy to very heavy rainfall in Mayurbhanj, Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendujhar, and adjoining districts.
The Met Centre has issued yellow and orange warnings for several districts between August 27 and September 1. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea due to rough conditions. Residents in low‑lying areas, farmers, and coastal communities have been urged to remain alert.
In the past 24 hours, Bhubaneswar recorded 52 mm rainfall, followed by Bamra in Sambalpur (49 mm) and Kakatpur in Puri (47 mm). The state’s average rainfall stood at 3.3 mm, 70% below normal.
Officials said precautionary measures are in place, with alerts issued to district administrations to monitor flood‑prone and coastal zones closely.
