Chief Justice Bhushan R. Gavai has formally recommended Justice Surya Kant as his successor, setting the stage for the next transition in the Supreme Court of India’s leadership. Justice Kant, the senior-most judge of the apex court, is expected to take over as the 53rd Chief Justice of India (CJI) upon Justice Gavai’s retirement on November 23, 2025.

Justice Surya Kant to Assume Office on November 24

Once the Union government issues the official notification, Justice Surya Kant will be sworn in as the new CJI on November 24, 2025. His tenure will extend until February 9, 2027, giving him about 14 months in office.

This recommendation follows a communication from the Union Ministry of Law and Justice on October 23, asking CJI Gavai to name his successor as per the established judicial convention.

CJI Gavai Praises His Successor

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Chief Justice Gavai described Justice Kant as “suited and competent in all aspects to take the helm”. He added that Justice Kant’s journey reflects determination and empathy:

“Like me, Justice Kant also belongs to a section of society that has faced struggles at every stage in life. This gives him a deep understanding of the challenges faced by those seeking justice.”

A Distinguished Judicial Journey

Justice Surya Kant, who hails from Haryana, will be the first person from the state to serve as the Chief Justice of India. His career is marked by academic excellence, administrative skill, and judicial integrity.

  • Youngest Advocate General of Haryana: Appointed at age 38.

  • High Court Judge: Elevated to the Punjab and Haryana High Court in 2004 at age 42.

  • Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court: Appointed in October 2018.

  • Supreme Court Judge: Elevated to the Supreme Court of India on May 24, 2019.

Even after joining the judiciary, Justice Kant pursued further education, earning a first-class master’s degree in law from Kurukshetra University in 2011.

A Legacy of Fairness and Efficiency

Justice Surya Kant is widely respected for his humility, even temperament, and deep sense of fairness. Colleagues and legal experts commend his efforts to streamline judicial administration and improve consistency across high courts, especially in monitoring the district judiciary’s performance.

A New Chapter for the Supreme Court

Justice Kant’s appointment marks a significant moment in India’s judicial history. As he prepares to take over from CJI Bhushan R. Gavai, the Supreme Court is expected to continue its focus on access to justice, judicial reforms, and institutional transparency.
