New Delhi: The 126-member Assam assembly poll is set to take place in three phases from March 27 to April 6 as campaigning by all major players is already in full swing.

The BJP and its allies Asom Gana Parishad and United People’s Party Liberal will be contesting together.

The Congress has stitched up a broad alliance with the AIUDF, BPF, CPI(M), CPI, CPI-ML, and the Anchalik Gana Morcha on its side.

In 2016, the BJP scripted history by ending Congress’s 15-year rule in Assam and forming the government for the first time in the state. BJP and its allies AGP and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) won 86 seats in the 126-member Assam assembly out of which BJP secured 60 seats followed by AGP which bagged 14, and BPF 12 seats.

Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will be contesting from Majuli – an ST reserved constituency and, the largest river island in the world – this time. Rajib Lochan Pegu from Congress is his opponent from this seat. Pegu represented Majuli for three consecutive terms since 2001 but lost to Sonowal in 2016 by 18,923 votes.

The Congress has fielded Romen Ch Borthakur from this high-profile seat.
