New Delhi: Ashok Gehlot is out of the race for Congress president after a rebellion by more than 90 Rajasthan MLAs that has upset the Gandhis, sources say. Mallikarjun Kharge and Digvijaya Singh are reportedly being considered for the job now.

Sources said the Congress leadership is unhappy with Ashok Gehlot for plotting the rebellion that has embarrassed the party in the middle of Rahul Gandhi’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra”.

The 71-year-old Gandhi favourite’s refusal to give up the post of Rajasthan Chief Minister has disappointed the Congress leadership, the sources say.

Mr Gehlot had earlier agreed to resign as Chief Minister and move on to his national role after Rahul Gandhi made it clear that the Congress would follow the “one person, one post” rule it adopted earlier this year as party of internal reforms.

But on Sunday, a meeting of MLAs to discuss Mr Gehlot’s move and his replacement as Rajasthan Chief Minister, saw hardly any attendance as a large number of MLAs attended a different meeting. After that meeting, they threatened to resign if Mr Gehlot’s rival Sachin Pilot was made Chief Minister.
