As India joins the global community in observing World Tourism Day 2026 under the theme “Digital Agenda and Artificial Intelligence to Redesign Tourism”, the country’s tourism sector continues to emerge as a powerful pillar of economic growth, employment, and cultural exchange.
According to official data released by the Ministry of Tourism, the sector contributed 5.22% to the national GDP and supported an impressive 8.46 crore jobs in 2023–24. Domestic tourist visits reached an astounding 428.55 crore in 2025, while foreign tourist visits rose to 2.53 crore, generating robust foreign exchange earnings of Rs 2,76,831 crore.
Launch of Transformative Digital Initiatives
To mark the occasion at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi, Union Minister for Tourism Gajendra Singh Shekhawat unveiled several key initiatives designed to strengthen the nation’s digital and physical tourism infrastructure:
- National Digital Tourism Stack: An open digital public infrastructure initiative aimed at making tourism offerings more discoverable, accessible, and trustworthy.
- Dekho Apna Desh 2.0: Focused on promoting lesser-known, tourism-ready destinations to ensure a more balanced geographic distribution of tourist footfall.
- Strategic Partnerships: New MoUs with leading industry organisations to boost destination visibility, digital outreach, and community participation.
Harnessing AI and Technology
India is rapidly modernising its travel ecosystem through advanced digital platforms. The revamped Incredible India Digital Platform now features AI-powered tools that offer personalised travel planning, real-time weather updates, and seamless booking integrations with Online Travel Agents (OTAs) and ASI monuments.
Meanwhile, platforms like NIDHI+ have streamlined the registration and classification of hospitality providers, listing over 63,740 accommodation units nationwide to foster transparency and ease of doing business.
International accessibility has also received a massive boost, with India issuing roughly 78% of all visas electronically through its expanded e-Visa facility, which now covers 172 countries and processes 95% of applications within 72 hours.
Balanced Infrastructure and Regional Celebrations
Beyond digital innovations, the government’s destination-centric frameworks—such as Swadesh Darshan 2.0, PRASHAD, and the expanded RCS UDAN aviation scheme—are opening up remote and spiritual circuits across the country.
Regional celebrations are equally vibrant, with Telangana hosting cultural programs and industry awards, and the Delhi Government organising “RANG • RAS • ROOH” at Baansera along the Yamuna. Through these multifaceted efforts, India is successfully building a connected, inclusive, and sustainable tourism landscape for the future.
