TRAI 30-day recharge plans

Indian prepaid mobile users can finally breathe a sigh of relief. In a major consumer-friendly regulatory overhaul, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has officially released the Telecom Consumer Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026.

The landmark policy introduces mandatory 30-day validity recharge plans and dedicated voice and SMS-only packs, dismantling the long-standing industry practice of standard 28-day billing cycles.

The move has drawn widespread appreciation, notably from BJP Rajya Sabha MP Raghav Chadha, who had previously championed the consumer cause in Parliament during his tenure with the AAP.

Ending the Burden of 13 Recharges a Year

For years, mobile subscribers across India have voiced frustration over standard “monthly” prepaid packs lasting only 28 days. This practice forced consumers to purchase 13 recharges annually instead of 12.

Celebrating the regulatory update on X, Chadha shared:

“Good news for Prepaid Mobile Users in India. The Govt just introduced Telecom Consumer Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026, consumers will now have: 30-day recharge plans, reducing the need for 13 monthly recharges to 12 in a year, Voice and SMS-only plans for those who do not need data…”

Chadha recalled raising these concerns directly in Parliament on March 11, pushing for flexible, affordable alternatives for budget-conscious citizens. He expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Government of India and TRAI for stepping in to prioritise consumer convenience.

Tailored Options for Non-Data Users

Under the newly amended framework, telecom operators are now legally required to offer Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) focusing strictly on voice and SMS services, catering to millions of subscribers who do not require bundled data packages.

Furthermore, telecom service providers must align these voice and SMS-only STVs with matching validity periods of 30 days—and any duration under 30 days—currently available for bundled voice, SMS, and data plans.

By eliminating forced data bundles and standardising true monthly cycles, TRAI’s 2026 framework delivers unprecedented flexibility, ensuring that low-budget consumers and basic phone users only pay for what they actually use.
