‘Won’t Call It Lynching’: Bengal CM Suvendu Adhikari on Indrajit Mondal’s Killing Amid Baruipur Violence

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday said he would not describe the killing of 26-year-old Indrajit Mondal as a lynching, claiming the victim was specifically identified before being attacked by a mob during violence that erupted in Baruipur.

The unrest followed public outrage over the alleged rape and murder of a 12-year-old girl, which triggered widespread protests and clashes in the area.

CM rejects lynching description

Speaking to reporters, Adhikari said the circumstances of Mondal’s death differed from a random mob lynching, alleging that the attackers had identified the victim before assaulting him.

He further claimed the killing was part of a larger conspiracy aimed at disturbing peace in the state.

According to the chief minister, those behind the violence sought to destabilise West Bengal as the government pursued development initiatives under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership.

Political and radical elements under scanner

Adhikari alleged that the unrest may have been fuelled by politically sidelined individuals, along with possible involvement of radical or ultra-left groups.

He said police were investigating not only those directly involved in the violence but also individuals suspected of instigating the unrest from behind the scenes.

Violence during protests

The chief minister claimed that despite repeated appeals by the police to maintain peace and assurances of action in the girl’s murder case, violence escalated.

He alleged that stones were hurled at Central Armed Police Forces personnel and police teams, and that several officers, including women personnel, came under attack during the clashes.

Investigation underway

Police have intensified investigations into both the murder of the minor girl and the subsequent violence that claimed Indrajit Mondal’s life.

Authorities are examining the sequence of events, identifying those involved in the mob attack, and probing allegations of organised instigation behind the unrest.
