Utkal University in Bhubaneswar introduced a new rule on Saturday, restricting the entry of petrol and diesel vehicles inside the campus between 9 am and 5 pm.
The initiative followed the advice of Odisha Governor and Chancellor Hari Babu Kambhampati, aiming to create a pollution-free environment.
Security guards stopped fuel-powered two-wheelers and four-wheelers at the main gate. Banners displayed the message of the initiative, and five security personnel enforced the restriction.
The move caused inconvenience as students, parents, staff, and visitors parked outside and walked long distances in the scorching heat. Some visitors opposed the rule and forcefully entered with vehicles, leading to heated arguments with guards.
Several visitors claimed the university had not provided prior information about the restriction. They said the sudden implementation created difficulties.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Chandi Prasad Nanda responded, stating that notices had been issued earlier. He explained that the decision aligned with the Governor’s suggestion and similar rules already exist in other universities across Odisha.
To reduce inconvenience, the university arranged battery-operated vehicles and ambulance services inside the campus. The administration is exploring additional alternatives since banks and offices operate within the premises, requiring regular access.
