A violent attack shook Odisha’s Mayurbhanj district when a woman assaulted her mother-in-law over suspicion of witchcraft.
The incident occurred in Ward No. 6 of Udala NAC.
According to reports, Savitri Dutta sat outside her house last evening when her daughter-in-law, Mami Dutta, dragged her inside. Mami struck Savitri with a stick and then attacked her repeatedly with a sharp weapon. She targeted the victim’s head and other parts of the body in an attempt to kill her.
Neighbours rushed to the spot after hearing Savitri’s cries. They rescued her and informed the police. Savitri was shifted to a hospital in critical condition.
Police detained Mami Dutta for questioning and launched an investigation. The victim alleged that her daughter-in-law carried out the attack because she suspected her of practising witchcraft.
This shocking case highlights the continuing menace of witchcraft suspicion in rural Odisha. Such incidents often lead to violence and social unrest. Authorities in Mayurbhanj have promised strict action against the accused.
The community expressed concern over the brutal assault and demanded awareness campaigns to curb superstition-driven violence.
