A deadly explosion targeting a train in Balochistan killed more than 24 people and injured around 50 others on Sunday, according to reports from Pakistan.
The blast reportedly occurred near a railway track close to Quetta and targeted a train carrying military personnel. Several members of the Pakistan Army were believed to be among those killed.
Explosion Near Railway Track
Initial reports suggested that a powerful bomb exploded either on or near the railway line shortly before the train reached its destination.
According to media reports, the blast site was located approximately one kilometre from the railway station.
The explosion caused severe destruction:
- Two train bogies overturned
- Coaches caught fire
- Thick smoke covered the area
- Nearby vehicles and structures were damaged
Visuals from the scene showed rescue workers and security personnel searching through damaged compartments for survivors.
Casualties and Rescue Operations
Authorities said over 24 people were killed, while dozens sustained injuries.
Rescue teams, paramilitary forces and local volunteers rushed to the scene to evacuate passengers trapped inside damaged train coaches.
Several injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals in Quetta for emergency treatment.
Authorities Investigating Cause
A senior Balochistan government official reportedly confirmed that an investigation into the blast is underway.
Officials have not yet officially announced which group was responsible for the attack.
However, suspicion immediately fell on separatist militant organisations operating in the region.
Balochistan’s Long History of Insurgency
Balochistan has witnessed repeated militant attacks over the years, with separatist groups demanding independence from Pakistan’s central government.
One of the most active insurgent groups in the region is the Balochistan Liberation Army.
The province has frequently seen:
- Attacks on military convoys
- Railway sabotage
- Bomb blasts
- Kidnappings and armed assaults
Similar Attacks in Recent Years
The latest incident comes amid a series of attacks targeting Pakistan’s rail infrastructure.
Last year, militants reportedly hijacked a passenger train carrying hundreds of passengers while travelling from Quetta toward Peshawar. Pakistani security forces later killed all attackers and rescued the hostages.
In October 2025, another blast derailed several coaches of the Jaffar Express in Sindh province, injuring multiple passengers.
Security Concerns Intensify
The latest bombing is expected to further increase security concerns in Pakistan, especially in the restive Balochistan region where armed insurgency and attacks on state infrastructure continue to challenge authorities.
