The Odisha government has received an investigative report regarding the construction of the Jagannath temple in Digha, submitted by the Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple Administration (SJTA), Dr. Arabinda K Padhee.
The report sheds light on multiple concerns related to the establishment of the temple and its representation, prompting authorities to take appropriate action.
One of the key revelations from the report is that the claims regarding the idol being carved from the Sriimandir wood are entirely false. The state government, after reviewing the findings, has declared that efforts will be made to remove the reference to “Jagannath Dham” in the temple’s name, as per national religious conventions. Officials emphasised that only four designated pilgrimage sites are recognised as “Dhams” in India, and no other location should be given this title.
Additionally, the report highlights concerns regarding temple rituals and priestly conduct, leading to the formulation of guidelines that will soon be distributed to all Jagannath temples across the state. These guidelines aim to standardise daily rituals and ensure the authenticity of temple practices.
Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan, while addressing the media, stated that Odisha will officially communicate with the West Bengal government regarding the necessary amendments to the temple’s title in Digha. A formal request will be sent to remove the mention of “Jagannath Dham” and modify the existing name accordingly.
Another major point of contention covered in the report is the involvement of temple servitors in rituals performed at external locations. The administration clarified that servitors are not permitted to conduct worship outside of designated temple premises. Additionally, the dissemination of confidential temple traditions outside of authorised channels will be restricted under the newly proposed directives.
In light of growing concerns, a dedicated five-member committee has been formed to oversee the assessment of wood preservation within the Shree Jagannath temple premises. It has been confirmed that the wood stored within the temple remains secure.
While submitting this report on behalf of the temple administration, Principal Secretary of the Law Department, Manas Ranjan Barik, Additional Secretary, Bibhu Prasad Panda and Shiba Prasad Mohapatra were present.
As the Odisha government proceeds with further examination, the Chief Minister is expected to be briefed on the findings, following which, subsequent measures will be implemented.
The controversy surrounding the Digha Jagannath temple continues to unfold, with authorities ensuring that tradition and authenticity remain upheld.
