West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee broke her silence on the ongoing Digha Jagannath Temple row, questioning the backlash over the state government’s plan to build a Jagannath temple in the coastal town.
Addressing the issue, Banerjee emphasised the pluralistic nature of religious worship in India, saying, “We respect the temple in Puri and we also respect Jagannath Dham. Kaali Temple and Gurdwaras are everywhere across the country. Temples are there in all places…Why is there so much anger on this issue?”

Taking a dig at the BJP, she added, “Why is nothing said when the BJP does something similar? Why the double standards?”
The controversy stems from the state’s recent announcement to construct a temple in Digha, which some critics claim may mirror or rival the historic Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. Banerjee’s statement aims to quell political and religious tensions while asserting the state’s right to celebrate diverse traditions.
